There was a time when emergency medical technicians knew more than graduating medical students and practicing physicians about medical emergencies. This book was written to prepare both for common emergencies. Part I focuses on the basic principles of life support by discussing the major pathophysiologic mechanisms that cause death or life-threatening emergencies. Part II discusses trauma by defining the injuring mechanisms and the body's responses to injury and by discussing the evaluation and the initial management of the critically injured patient and the management of the specific injuries. Part III discusses acute disorders, arranged by organ system, by general category, and by age group. Part IV discusses the medicolegal implications of emergency medical care. Part V is a book withinin a book. In it are described and illustrated the common medical procedures carried out in the emergency room setting. This section not only describes how to perform a procedure but also how to avoid some of the common pitfalls.
